Although the Seville name was first used to distinguish hardtop Eldorados from their convertible counterparts in the 1950s, it's probably more fondly remembered as the first "small" Cadillac conceived during the oil crisis of the mid-'70s. Although it was significantly smaller than any Cadillac before it, the Seville's more compact dimensions and modern amenities helped it attract buyers who may not have considered a Cadillac previously. By the mid-'80s, however, the Seville had morphed into an unrecognizable four-door that barely registered on the luxury sedan map. Cadillac finally woke up from its slumber in the '90s and reengineered the Seville into a modern European-style sedan, but it was not until 1998 that the Seville became a legitimate player on the world scene. Introduced at the 1997 Frankfurt International Motor Show (the first American car ever to make its debut on foreign soil), the '98 Seville boasted a high-tech Northstar V8 engine, athletic bodywork and an array of electronic gadgetry that few cars on the road could match. Since then, it has received numerous enhancements to keep it current in the highly competitive luxury sedan segment. Consumer reaction has been mixed. Traditional Cadillac buyers find the Seville comfortable and modern, but traditional European car buyers still consider it too soft and unrefined. We consider it a supremely comfortable cruiser, but those who prefer a more athletic feel to their sedans will find European competitors more to their liking. Body Styles, Trim Levels and Options: The Seville is available in SLS trim only. It features all of the luxury amenities you would expect in a top-line Cadillac sedan such as leather upholstery, fully automatic climate control and power-adjustable bucket seats. Notable options include a DVD-based navigation system, wood grain trim, a premium Bose audio system, satellite radio and a power sunroof. Powertrains and Performance: At the heart of the Seville is Cadillac's exclusive 4.6-liter Northstar V8. Rated at 275 horsepower, the Northstar V8 propels the Seville swiftly and with little apparent effort, remaining smooth and quiet at virtually any engine speed. The standard electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission features a performance algorithm shift program that senses the driver's individual driving style and adjusts the transmission performance accordingly. |
