Clarion HX D10 CD Player The HX-D10 is a single CD player with an AM/FM tuner. It also serves as a controller for a DSP/EQ, TV Tuner, DVD Deck Modules and a CD/MD changer.
The motorized brushed aluminum face with a bright white dot matrix display makes this unit quite a beauty. The Clarion HX D10 rotary knob is setup to adjust the volume as
well as to adjust the settings within the 2 built-in menus. An external amp is required for use as the Clarion HX D10 lacks internal amplification.
This unit excels with its three 4V preamp outputs. Also, its two 24bit DAC's with 128x oversampling is hard to beat.
Ease of use:This unit is quite easy to operate. One of the first things I noticed upon unpacking was the steering wheel remote. This remote is rather small and
only possesses 4 basic functions: Volume control, track/station search, CD restart, and power/function. The face is very easy to use, with separate buttons
for the title and adjustment features as well as audio adjustment mode. The Clarion HX D10 buttons are neatly situated on the unit so that it is not difficult to distinguish between them.
CD Playback/Radio Reception Quality:All of my regular radio stations were able to come in, and it even picked up some stations that I didn't know existed.
The usable FM sensitivity is 11dBf, while the usable AM sensitivity is 25V. The CD playback quality is much better than my previous Pioneer.
However, the CD laser is very sensitive and has a tendency to hang or skip on CD's that have deep scratches. Some of the CDs that worked
flawlessly in my Pioneer now hang and skip with the Clarion. What I mean by "hang and skip" is the playback itself will hang for a 1 second loop
until it either clears the scratch or advances 14 seconds forward on the track. Regardless of whichever of these occurs, the Clarion HX D10 loop lasts around 5-10 seconds
before music resumes. Other than the skipping (which is to be expected with most top end head units due to more accurate CD lasers) this unit performs beautifully.
One nice thing about this unit is its ability to read CD Text if available. One CD that I have was automatically read by the unit so it was unnecessary to
manually input that information. The Clarion HX D10 , as previously mentioned, has two clocks. One can be displayed in place of the CD Text/Radio Station information,
while the other is located on the right hand side of the face. One thing I do miss by changing to this head unit is the DEQ display. This second clock displays the
hours as red dashes that create a circle around the minute digits.
For anyone searching for a classy looking CD player that can still get a little flashy (with possible screen savers, scrolling CD Text and/or 2 different colored key
illuminations) that has strong sound quality, Clarion HX D10 is for you. Personally, I don't have either the screen saver or CD text on my unit. Even though there are a few
cons, the largest of which is its extremely limited 3 band EQ, the Clarion HX-D10 is well worth its current sale price at Crutchfield. This is a limited edition unit, so if you
are interested, I would recommend picking one up very soon before Crutchfield and other resellers sell out.
