On January 9th 2006, Ferrari released the first images of their forthcoming 599 GTB. Successor to the Ferrari 575M Maranello, the Ferrari 599 is Ferrari?s latest front V12-engined two-seater and a spiritual successor to the legendary Ferrari 250 GT, Ferrari 275 GTB and Ferrari Daytona. With an Enzo-derived 5999cc V12 shoehorned into a latest generation all-alloy chassis, the 620bhp Ferrari GTB will become Ferrari?s most powerful V12 production car ever. It's expected to weigh in at just over 1600kg. As usual, the bodywork and interior have been created by Pininfarina who've hit the jackpot after several fairly indifferent designs in recent years.A mixture of soft curves, sharp creases and a few challenging details that take a little time to fully appreciate, the 599 makes the poorly executed 575M look very tame in comparison. Officially announced at the Detroit Motor Show in January, the Ferrari 599 won?t actually be unveiled until the Geneva Salon on February 28th when we?ll bring you a full technical appraisal of this stunning new machine.A traditional 6-speed manual transmission as well as Ferrari's 6-speed sequential manual gearbox called 'F1 SuperFast' is offered. The e-diff active differential from the Ferrari F430 is not used. However, the Manettino concept first seen in the F430 also appears in this car. Ferrari sourced the Delphi Corporation's MagneRide semi-active magneto rheological dampers. Reviewers of the car have mentioned that the MagneRide suspension gives the 599 a very comfortable ride but allows it to handle well at the same time.The Fiorano also sees the debut of Ferrari's new traction control system, called Ferrari F1-Trac. Reportedly tuned using inputs from 7-time Formula 1 World Champion Schumacher, the system supposedly allows a competent driver to lap the Fiorano test track at just 1 second behind Michael's time. |
