New looks and keen prices give the Shuma 2 a fighting chance in the budget car market. Plenty of standard equipment but engines are unrefined.

Shuma II has all the qualities you'd expect from Kia: value, durability and lots of equipment. The Hyundai Elantra (another Korean) is its closest list price rival. Modern Japanese and European models are finished much better, but are much more expensive when equipped to a similar level. At least that's the theory. In reality, you'll find tempting deals on more mainstream cars at the big supermarkets that wipe out Kia's price advantage.
The Kia range has slowly been improving and revisions to the original Shuma mean it doesn't look that out of place alongside the new Sorento and roomy Magentis. Shuma 2 is basically a Mentor saloon with a hatchback and updated looks. If you enjoy enthusiastic driving the Shuma isn't for you but if equipment and price are all important, this one's worth a look. The 1.6 is extra cheap, although it lacks the refinements of the surprisingly peppy 1.8. There's good space inside both cars and build quality is better but don't expect too much at this level.
You may not expect a great deal paying such a trifling amount for a nearly new car, but the Shuma isnt the lacklustre disaster many would imagine. Of the three models from which to choose, the 1.8 GSX is probably the best bet. The 1.
5 S model is pretty uninspiring, but the SX adds tinted glass, split-folding rear seats, central locking, a height-adjustable drivers seat and power for the windows and mirrors. GSX buyers meanwhile, can also expect alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, a sunroof, ABS and a front passenger airbag. All models come with the single five-door body style though a four-door saloon known as the Mentor II is available, identical in every respect apart from the absence of a 1.8GSX flagship version.
The styling is certainly neat, especially at the back. Whilst it wont be vying for any Rear Of The Year awards, the tail of the Shuma has a pleasantly pert, chiselled look, and some surprisingly classy badge detailing. As weve said, despite the latest look, the new Shuma shares much with the original Mentor which had a surprisingly impressive pedigree. Its floorpans, engines and transmissions came straight from Mazdas 323, the bodywork was created by British design consultants IAD and the handling originally fine-tuned in association with Lotus.
