The chances of Kia being at the top of your off-roader wish-list are pretty slim - especially if you can recall the old one. But times are a changin' at Kia. The Picanto city car is a lovable thing and has quite rightly leapt into the top ten supermini sales charts, while the Sorento - a more than half-decent 4x4 workhorse with bags of kit - is also doing brisk business in the showrooms. The new Sportage, which has just reached British shores in right-hand drive form, looks set to improve Kia's image further. It's a handsome creation. Chunky in all the right places and well-proportioned, it's everything the old car wasn't. In a further concession to the 21st century, Kia has relocated the spare wheel from the tailgate to under the boot floor. The cabin is another area where Kia has spent a lot of time and effort giving the Sportage a higher quality feel. The dashboard is well made while the fake metal inserts on the centre console look convincing enough. However, the seats are pretty awful affairs. It's not just that they are part trimmed in what appears to be textured vinyl; they're soft and unsupportive and offer precious little comfort after 20 miles or so. That said, there's plenty of room both front and rear and the seat folding mechanism helps create a rather handy 1,887-litre load area.Cheap it may have been, but the previous Sportage was far from the last word in dynamic ability. And we're not talking about sub-nine minute laps of the Nrburgring here. A trip to the shops would have troubled its wobbly body-on-frame construction. That's all changed with the adoption of an all-in-one monocoque body. The ride quality is improved while the body control is light years ahead of its predecessor. It doesn't have quite the fleetness of foot or fun factor of, say, a Toyota RAV4 or Nissan X-Trail, but it's safe, competent and unlikely to give you any scary moments on a twisty road. Unlike the old car, which used an old-school part-time 4x4 system that had to be changed manually, the new Sportage is fitted with a torque-on-command system that only engages four-wheel drive when sensors detect the front two are struggling. |
