The Maserati Spyder comes amply powered by a lightweight, Maserati-built, 4.2-liter V8 that uses variable valve timing and electronic drive-by-wire throttle control to generate an impressive 390 hp. It launches the car from zero to 60 mph in under five seconds and on to a staggering top speed of 177 mph. With the top down, the sounds coming from the tailpipes are intoxicating.The V8 can be fitted to either a conventional six-speed manual transmission or an electronically controlled Maserati Cambiocorsa sequential-manual-shift gearbox ? which features a clutch but not a clutch pedal, and is instead shifted by flicking paddles behind the steering wheel. While it does offer a measure of novelty and flexibility with a full-auto mode that does all the work for you like a traditional Maserati automatic, it's not as smooth. It does, however, include a "hill holder" function that automatically engages the brakes for a few seconds on an incline as the driver moves his or her foot from the brake to the gas pedal. Because complex transmissions like Maserati's Cambiocorsa are relatively new in production vehicles (as opposed to race cars, where they've been used for some time), their resilience and reliability remain to be seen.An optional self-adjusting suspension, called Skyhook, improves the Maserati Spyder's inherently nimble handling while allowing a more comfortable ride over rough roads.Surprisingly, the Maserati Spyder doesn't come with some amenities that are standard on much less-expensive vehicles, such as cruise control, heated seats, high-intensity discharge headlamps and an alarm system, all of which are optional. |
