This folding hardtop business isnt all that new. The Ford Skyliner was the wowing the crowds in the late fifties, long before Mercedes popularised the idea with the slick SLK. Its took Peugeot, the manufacturer who claims to have invented the concept with their 401 and 601 Eclipse models of the Thirties, to democratise the idea. You cant get a folding hard top much cheaper than their 14,145 206 CC 1.
Whilst its still not the sort of price sticker that will sell to the masses, the Peugeot 206CC 1.6 has entered a market sector that seems to have suddenly become tightly contested. Whereas budget roadsters were once seen as the poor relation of their higher-powered brethren, buyers are increasingly turning to the 1.6-litre entry level models, perhaps realising that out and out performance isnt the forte of cars like the 206CC, the Vauxhall Tigra and the Nissan Micra C+C.
Whilst cars like Mazda MX-5 boast a clean sheet of paper roadster profile, the 206 suffers the handicap of having been adapted from the familiar 206 hatchback shape. The problem with most hatchback-based cabriolets is that theyve always had an inescapable pram-like quality about them. The stubby proportions, untidy hood mechanisms and inelegant rollover bars made them look about as graceful as an industrial dumpster. Thats one accusation that you could certainly never level at the 206 CC.
Even with the roof up, it has a cheeky coupe appeal and with the hood down the long rear deck ensures the little Peugeot is svelte enough to avoid any pram-like connotations. The recipe for the 206 CC is otherwise reasonably familiar. The massively popular 206 acts as a basis before undergoing some rather serious surgery.

Offered at a saving of around 700 (with like-for-like spec) over its slightly quicker 2.0-litre sibling and the 1.6HDi diesel, the 1.6-litre 206 CC looks to be the pick of the range, especially since its the only version that also gets the option of a Tiptronic automatic gearbox.
You can get this particular variant in Sport guise for 14,145 or opt for the top of the range is the plush 15,145 Allure version, complete with leather upholstery and a full-house stereo. In the past, Peugeot has proved itself a manufacturer prepared to take a few risks. Despite the me-too success of the iconic 205 GTi, many of the models bearing the lion badge have been innovative and forward thinking. The 206 CC follows in this tradition, being the only four-seater hardtop cabriolet available; the other car which shares such a roof mechanism is the strictly-for-two Mercedes-Benz SLK.
Operating the roof is simplicity itself. Behind the sun visors are a couple of latches which youll need to unclip before pressing the button next to the handbrake. At this point, a set of electronically controlled hydraulic motors will go to work, lowering the windows, popping up the rear deck before collapsing and folding the roof in on itself. Its then swallowed by the rear bootlid.
