Renaults Latest Espace Enjoys Some Styling Tweaks, A Few Added Features And Some Revised Engineering. Andy Enright Reports On The Results As names go, New Espace 2006 may not be the snappiest but at least its clear what youre getting. At the risk of irking Renault, Ill respectfully ditch that clumsy title and stick to Espace. This latest model is a development of a car that was first launched in Spring 2003, facelifted in early 2005 and now sees yet another and rather more wide-reaching set of nips and tucks. Certain things dont change. This is still the plushest, most advanced MPV money can buy and its still cutting edge as far as progressive design is concerned. Lets start with the styling features. The headlights are an integral part of what Renault describe as a softer styling theme for the latest Espace and a slimmer bumper and a simpler grille design lose some of the rather fin-de-siecle styling of this models predecessor. The lights feature Bi-Xenon lamps for better illumination and they also pivot, taking into account steering input and vehicle speed. This helps illuminate roadside obstacles such as pedestrians just beyond the apex of a dark corner or roadside debris that could cause an accident. Opt for any model from Dynamique upwards and chrome-trimmed foglamps are included. An easy way to transform a vehicles appearance is to usher in new designs of alloy wheel and the 17 and 18-inch rims that feature on this model Espace are a bit smarter than the old designs without being too showy. The rear lights have also been revised while the interior benefits from a revised range of upholstery choices and trim colours. Its not all window dressing though. Important safety upgrades have been introduced including rain and light sensors, "See Me Home" lighting, front and rear parking assist, a tyre pressure monitoring system and Emergency Brake Assist to beef up the response of the anti lock brakes. The Electronic Stability Program has also been improved with the addition of understeer control. Otherwise theres the eight airbags and three-point seatbelts with load limiters that will have Renault executives eating their berets if this car doesnt sail through the Euro NCAP five-star qualification. "Renault give the Espace VIP billing, selling it exclusively through their range of Premier Centres" Renault have also strengthened the range of powerplants on offer with the addition of a punchy 175bhp 2.0dCi unit. Able to accelerate a standard wheelbase Espace to 60mph in a fraction under ten seconds and on to a top speed of 127mph, this state of the art common rail turbodiesel is also capable of turning in a combined fuel figure of 38.2mpg, quite something when you consider the Espace weighs as much as a Mercedes S Class. Its a testament to Renaults engineering that a vehicle this big and rapid will churn out just 200g/km of carbon dioxide. Elsewhere Renault have done a little tinkering and fettling. The 3.0-litre dCi engine benefits from a six-speed flick-shift automatic Proactive gearbox while the standard features on each trim level have been given a rethink. The Authentique trim replaces the carbon/beige theme with carbon grey while the Expression now includes a rear parking sensor, revised upholstery and a pre-telephone kit. Move on up to the big selling Dynamique model and youll get, 17" alloys, chrome door handles, chrome roof bars and the option of that 175bhp dCi diesel engine along with the 170bhp turbocharged petrol. The plush Privilege adds the Bi-Xenon headlamps with auto height adjustment and wash and parking proximity sensor. If youve got the means to stretch to the range-topping Initiale model, which is only offered in long-wheelbase Grand Espace form, theres an additional front parking sensor, softer Vogue full leather upholstery, a 3D Bluetooth Nav Com system with a 6CD changer thats also MP3 compatible with remote control. This generation Espace is an evolutionary advance over its predecessor rather than anything manifestly revolutionary. What is surprising is that Renault have, if anything, toned down their recent excess of novelty and have restored some normality to the Espace. Whereas the MKIII model was built around a radical spaceframe chassis with composite parts, the MKIV Espace instead opts for a more conventional steel monocoque platform shared with the Laguna. Only the wings and tailgate are now made of plastic composites, the doors and bonnet being fabricated in aluminium with a steel roof.
