Miele Sealed System™300/400/500/600 Series Vacuum Cleaners

    The Background

Everyone is exposed to fine particles, but children, the elderly and those with preexisting heart and lung disease are most at risk.

EPA states fine particles are hazardous

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has declared that adverse health effects, including premature death, aggravated asthma and chronic bronchitis, are associated with exposure to fine particles. While individual particles are invisible to the naked eye, collectively they can appear as smog or dust clouds. Fine particles originate from a variety of sources: Outdoors they are generated by diesel trucks, fuel combustion and power plants. But fine particles can also pollute the air indoors through wood stoves, air fresheners, and even...vacuum cleaners.

    Who is most at risk?

Everyone is exposed to fine particles, but children, the elderly and those with preexisting heart and lung disease are most at risk.

    The Problem

Vacuum cleaner motors generate fine particles

A recent independent study shows that vacuum cleaners made by other leading manufacturers can produce an indoor air quality equivalent to Los Angeles on a smoggy day. New scientific research conducted by the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute determined that vacuum cleaners generate fine particulate matter due to normal wear and tear of the vacuum motor. The Institute tested air exhausted from vacuum cleaners for fine particle content. Surprisingly, many vacuum cleaners actually pollute the air your breathe by exhausting millions of these particles per minute. But not all vacuum cleaners pollute the air. In fact, only one--the Miele--proved 99.8% effective in capturing and retaining the fine particles it generates.

A recent independent study shows that vacuum cleaners made by other leading manufacturers can produce an indoor air quality equivalent to Los Angeles on a smoggy day.

    The Solution

    Miele Sealed System™ vacuum cleaners

    Post-motor filtration

Today many vacuum cleaners have filters positioned between the motor and the exhaust opening. This postmotor position is important for capturing fine particles that are generated by the vacuum cleaner's motor. However, if air is not directed through the post-motor filter, the filter cannot be successful at capturing fine particles.

    Miele's original Sealed System

Improperly sealed vacuum cleaners allow air to escape through various non-filtered openings. The Miele vacuum cleaner is completely sealed. Individual compartments and the system as a whole are all sealed with durable rubber. The Sealed System protects against leakage and ensures proper air flow direction.

    HEPA filters

Filter names such as "HEPA-like" and "micro-filtration" can be misleading. To be called HEPA, a filter must prove 99.97% effective at capturing particles 0. 3 microns and larger in a test environment. But even a true HERA filter cannot succeed at capturing these particles if it is placed in a machine that leaks. Only Miele provides a true HEPA filter with post-motor positioning in conjunction with its Sealed System. This unique combination makes Miele the only vacuum cleaner capable of capturing practically a// dangerous fine particles.

    Miele Sealed System

    1. Air enters through the floor nozzle and travels up the hose to the bag.

    2. Air emitted from the bag moves through the filter and into the sealed motor chamber.

    3. Air moves through the motor chamber toward the post-motor filter.

    4. Air exits through the postmotor HEPA filter which traps fine particles.

    5. Air released is almost totally free of particles 0.3 microns and larger.

    6. The bag and motor coments are sealed by rubber gaskets.

    7. The unique rib system helps maintain powerful flow as air moves through the vacuum cleaner, even as the dustbag fills.

    The Proof

Research proves Miele captures fine particles

"One can assert with absolute certainty that the Miele vacuum cleaner produces hundreds to thousands times fewer particles than the other vacuum cleaners tested."

The Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute conducted research comparing a Miele vacuum cleaner to eight leading vacuum cleaners. Test results show the Miele Sealed System vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter captures hundreds to thousands times more fine motor particles per minute.

The air exhausted from Miele 300/400 series vacuum cleaners with a HEPA filter is almost as pure as the air in Antarctica.
