For 2007, Volvo's swoopy XC90 SUV comes with several enhancements, including a new engine: the five-cylinder turbo of 2006 is replaced with a new inline 3.2-litre six-cylinder that makes 235 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque, mated to an equally new six-speed automatic transmission. Volvo says that despite the extra cylinder, the engine is the same exterior size as the turbo, and returns the same fuel numbers, although with a surprising request for premium fuel (in combined driving, I averaged 13.0 L/100 km for the week). Still, my choice is the available 4.4-litre V8, which is much better suited to the vehicle. The six has considerable lag when asked for passing power on the highway: hit the throttle, and you have to wait for a downshift to bring up the rpm enough to put the truck where you want it to go.
The XC90 has all-wheel drive, but under normal driving conditions, about 95 per cent of power goes to the front wheels. Should it detect wheel slippage - and it only takes less than a seventh of a wheel rotation for it to happen - it will send up to 50 per cent torque to the rear wheels. Stability and traction control are standard.
The XC90 has a comfortable ride; you hear bumps as you go over them, but you don't feel them. Although it's an SUV, the handling is surprisingly taut, and the vehicle never feels unwieldy or top-heavy. It corners very well, with no discernable body roll, and feels planted; the acceleration aside, this is a very enjoyable vehicle to pilot. It may be a cliché, but the XC90 drives much smaller than it really is, and only when you look out the back window do you realize its length.
